Bodegas Corral and Bodegas Luzón: Triumph in monopoly markets with the award of two International Tenders

From Bodegas Corral and Bodegas Luzón, we are pleased to announce that we have been selected in two international Tenders, which will allow our wines to be present in markets regulated by state monopolies. Specifically, our Don Jacobo Gran Reserva 2010 will be available in Alko Finland in mid-April, while Finca Luzón Crianza 2021 will be launched in LCBO Canada in September.

Understanding Tenders in the Wine Market

In several Nordic countries and Canada, the marketing of alcoholic beverages is under the control of state monopolies. These bodies regulate the import, distribution and sale of alcohol in order to monitor and balance consumption within their territories. To introduce new products, these monopolies issue Tenders, which are public bidding processes where they specify the types of wines they wish to introduce, based on local market trends and preferences. Interested wineries submit their proposals through local agents, and after a rigorous selection process that includes blind tastings and the fulfilment of strict requirements, the wine that best suits the monopoly’s needs is chosen.

Don Jacobo Gran Reserva 2010 in Alko Finland

Our Don Jacobo Gran Reserva 2010 has been selected by Alko, the Finnish monopoly, to form part of its exclusive range of wines. This wine, made from a careful blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, has been aged for 36 months in American oak barrels and a further 36 months in bottle, giving it exceptional complexity and elegance. The vineyards, located on the slopes of Moncalvillo in the Rioja Alta, have vines over 50 years old, harvested by hand to ensure the highest quality. This recognition in Finland reinforces our presence in the Nordic market and underlines the excellence of our wines.

Finca Luzón Crianza 2021 in LCBO Canada

On the other hand, Luzón Finca Luzón Crianza 2021 has been selected by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) in Canada. This wine, which combines the Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, has been recognised for its quality and distinctive character. The inclusion of this wine in the Canadian market, through such a competitive process as the LCBO Tender, is a testament to the dedication and passion we put into every bottle.

The challenge and reward of Tenders

Participating in the Tenders of these monopolies represents a significant challenge for wineries. The process is highly competitive and requires a thorough understanding of local market preferences, as well as the ability to meet precise specifications in terms of style and price. In addition, the need to work with agents or importers experienced in these processes is crucial to successfully navigate the complexities of each market.

However, being selected in these Tenders offers substantial rewards. Not only does it provide access to markets that are difficult to penetrate, but it also validates the quality and appeal of our wines on an international stage. It also establishes a relationship with the monopolies that can facilitate future business opportunities and strengthen our brand presence abroad.

Strategies for success in monopoly markets

Our experience has taught us that success in these markets is essential:

  • Matching offers to Tenders: It is essential to present wines that align with the specifications and trends identified by the monopolies, ensuring that they meet the style and price requirements set.
  • Collaborate with experienced local agents: Working with importers or agents who have a deep understanding of Tender processes and a strong relationship with the monopolies can make all the difference to the success of the proposal.
  • Engage with the press and decision-makers: Establishing connections with the media and monopoly decision-makers can increase the visibility and recognition of our wines, positively influencing future Tender opportunities.

Looking to the future

The award of these two Tenders reinforces our commitment to excellence and the internationalisation of our wines. We will continue to focus on quality, innovation and understanding of global markets to bring the best of our winery to consumers around the world. These achievements motivate us to continue exploring new opportunities and consolidating our presence in key markets, always with the passion and dedication that characterise Bodegas Corral y Bodegas Luzón.
