Los Corrales de Moncalvillo Maturana Blanca 2022 receives 93 points from James Suckling
The prestigious international wine publication James Suckling has awarded 93 points to Los Corrales de Moncalvillo Maturana Blanca 2022, produced at Bodegas Corral (Navarrete, Rioja Alta). This recognition places the label among the most outstanding white wines of the region and confirms the winery’s commitment to reviving Rioja’s historic grape varieties with a contemporary interpretation.
Maturana Blanca is one of the oldest and most distinctive grapes of the Rioja vineyard. Documented since the 17th century and virtually disappeared for decades, it has found in the fresh slopes of Moncalvillo an ideal place to thrive. The vineyard, located at higher altitude and directly influenced by the Sierra, allows for a slow ripening that translates into wines with great balance and freshness.
For the 2022 vintage, Bodegas Corral vinified Maturana Blanca with special care, seeking to highlight its varietal character. The wine underwent controlled fermentation and six months of aging in new 225-liter French oak barrels, with periodic bâtonnage of its fine lees. It then rested for three months in the wine cellar at a constant temperature, followed by another three months in bottle before release. A process designed to combine complexity, freshness, and aging potential.
The result has been praised by the James Suckling tasting panel, which recognized the authenticity and finesse of this Rioja white. In the glass, Los Corrales de Moncalvillo Maturana Blanca 2022 shows a pale yellow color with golden reflections. On the nose it reveals floral notes, citrus peel, fresh herbs, and an elegant almond undertone. On the palate it is clean and enveloping, with vibrant acidity, a subtle creaminess, and a lingering persistence.
This wine represents a commitment to innovation rooted in tradition, rescuing a minority variety to place it on the map of great Spanish whites. The score from James Suckling, one of the world’s most influential wine critics, validates this approach and confirms Rioja’s ability to produce white wines with strong personality.
With a recommended serving temperature between 7º and 9ºC, Maturana Blanca 2022 is a versatile companion at the table. It pairs perfectly with rice dishes, creams, fish, and seafood, thanks to its freshness and structure.
The international recognition comes at a time when Bodegas Corral continues to strengthen its commitment to estate vineyards and to the expression of the most distinctive terroirs of Rioja Alta. The 93-point rating is, without a doubt, an incentive to keep exploring new ways of interpreting Rioja’s identity through authenticity and respect for its legacy.
